At The Game Awards 2024, the official reveal trailer for Game of Thrones: Kingsroad was unveiled, giving viewers a sneak peek at some of the iconic characters as they’ll appear in-game. This was followed by a gameplay trailer, further fueling excitement just as anticipation for the closed beta test was beginning to build. Though these teasers have provided some insight, many fans are still left with questions regarding the storyline and character involvement. In an exclusive interview with Game Rant, Hyun-il Jang, the division director at Netmarble Neo, offered some clarity on what players can expect from this intriguing new chapter.
Adapting characters that have been previously portrayed in live action is no small feat, but Game of Thrones: Kingsroad aims to do just this. Besides introducing new faces, the game features several familiar ones, challenging developers to capture their essence. Jang detailed how the team at Netmarble tackled this daunting task:
“The design team focused extensively on not just mimicking the iconic look of these characters from the show, but also on embodying their distinct personalities. Building on their on-screen appearances, we developed the 3D models and rigorously tested various animation scenarios to ensure they reflected each character’s traits. Key aspects like facial expressions were honed for authenticity. For instance, particular care was taken with Ramsay’s sinister expressions and his submissive demeanor in his father’s presence, ensuring these attributes come through beautifully in pivotal scenes.”
The game’s open-world setup and realistic art style only added to the complexity of this undertaking. While current game footage of Kingsroad is limited, available trailers have shown impressive fidelity in character visuals. Jang discussed the design team’s focus on capturing the essence of these characters, hoping it signals great things to come.
A major draw of Game of Thrones lies in its diverse and intricate cast of characters entwined in political intrigue. While Kingsroad spins its own tale, it’s set against the backdrop of Game of Thrones Season 4’s mounting tensions among Westerosi Houses. Jang explained why this period was particularly ripe for storytelling and shared insights into the protagonist’s role:
“Players step into the shoes of the heir to House Tyre, a once respected but now diminished Northern family. With the protagonist’s father on his deathbed, it falls on them to restore the family’s honor. The journey is fraught with challenges, like teaming up with Jon Snow to face the White Walkers lurking in the Haunted Forest. Bound to the Wall, Jon entrusts the protagonist with the mission to venture across Westeros, rallying allies for the North while striving to secure their place as their house’s true heir.”
Jang also referenced a scene from the official reveal trailer hinting at a pivotal face-off with Cersei Lannister. The game promises a true “game of thrones” experience, where players start from humble beginnings and work their way through trials, with Jon Snow offering guidance. Additionally, the trailer’s focus on Lord Varys may suggest his and other characters’ interactions with the player throughout their journey.
