In an exciting update for gamers, Sony has just unveiled a permanent price reduction for the PSVR 2. Starting next month, the PS5 and PC-compatible virtual reality headset will be available for $400.
Originally launched nearly two years ago at a price of $550, the PSVR 2 hasn’t seen much spotlight lately. There was no mention during Sony’s recent State of Play event, and the headset’s two-year anniversary passed with little fanfare. However, the company is now making waves by dropping the price to $400 in the U.S., €450 in Europe, £400 in the UK, and ¥66,980 in Japan, beginning in March.
What’s interesting is that this $400 price tag applies to both the basic PSVR bundle—which includes the headset, two Sense controllers, and headphones—and the Horizon Call of the Mountain hardware bundle. Previously, the latter was priced at $600 when it launched in February 2023.
Although there have been past sales offering even deeper discounts, such as the Horizon Call of the Mountain bundle reaching as low as $350 in November 2024, the new price cut signals more potential savings in the future.
Sony is also pushing a line-up of high-quality games for the PSVR 2 in its pricing announcement. Titles such as Skydance’s Behemoth, Metro Awakening VR, and Alien: Rogue Incursion stand out, with upcoming games like Aces of Thunder, Dreams of Another, Hitman World of Assassination, and The Midnight Walk on the horizon. Despite these promising game releases, Sony’s full backing of the PSVR 2 seems slightly reserved.
To date, Sony has released a limited selection of first-party titles for the PSVR 2, including Horizon Call of the Mountain and VR modes for games like Gran Turismo 7, Resident Evil Village, and Resident Evil 4 Remake. This is a softer approach compared to the robust line-up for the original PSVR back in 2016, which included Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Blood & Truth, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, PlayStation VR Worlds, VR Playroom, and VR modes for Gran Turismo Sport and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.
However, it’s worth noting that Sony has provided a boost for PSVR 2 owners by releasing a PC Adapter last August for $60. This allows gamers to connect to a VR-ready PC and enjoy SteamVR games such as Half-Life: Alyx and Fallout 4 VR.
Future discounts could spur sales, especially if we see a repeat of the 42% reduction seen during the last Black Friday, potentially bringing the PSVR 2 down to just $232. Such savings could transform the headset into a must-have accessory for PS5 owners eager to dive into an expanding library of third-party titles and excellent titles from the past.
