Epic Games just dropped this jawbreaker announcement on Tuesday—I mean, who saw that coming? They rolled out this thing called the Persona Device at their State of Unreal 2025 gig. Yeah, I know, sounds like some sci-fi gadget, right? Anyway, the deal is that folks will soon get to mess around with their own NPCs in Fortnite—loading them up with all sorts of chatter, goals, personalities, you name it. It’s like giving your digital buddies a personality makeover, and apparently, this is happening “later this year”—or so they say.
During this shindig, Andrew Grant and Andrew Ruffini (props for having the same first name—makes remembering stuff easier, right?) showcased this thing with a tech demo. They whipped up an AI named Mr. Buttons—total diva, by the way, with that snarky personality. But hey, maybe that’s just me reading into it. They said they’re sharing tech they picked up from playing around with AI Darth Vader—I mean, imagine if Vader sat you down and shared tech secrets over coffee. Wild.
So, there’s this scene where Mr. Buttons is all like, “Press the button!”—as if life wasn’t already pressing my buttons. And the Epic peeps are talking with it like it’s one of them. Kind of makes you pause and wonder what’s next, ya know?
Fast rewind to a few months back when they launched AI Darth Vader. The way they used a tweaked James Earl Jones voice? It was spooky and cool and kinda overwhelming all at once. But—surprise, surprise—that perfect Vader aura? Yeah, it didn’t exactly play out as planned. Oh, the irony (or maybe not).
Now, I’m itching to see how this Persona Device will shake things up. I mean, we’re talking about putting more AI power into players’ hands.
