Okay, so Google might, just might, be gearing up to show us smart glasses at this thing called Google I/O. It’s happening next week, and they’re probably eyeing a matchup with those Ray-Ban Meta thingamajigs. Just a hunch, but yeah.
So, I’m watching this promo, and who pops up? Sameer Samat, the Android Ecosystem bigwig. He’s rocking what looks suspiciously like smart glasses. He doesn’t flat-out say, “Hey, new gadget alert!” but kinda hints that everyone there will witness some wild Android stuff. Cue dramatic music.
Gotta admit, I went all detective mode on this. Basically, I cropped a YouTube screenshot—because that’s how we roll—and bam! The glasses have this Ray-Ban Wayfarer vibe, complete with a camera sensor chilling on the left temple. No idea if it’s intentional or whatever, but it’s stuck in my head now.
Oh, and there’s an image floating around—yep, courtesy of Google. There’s some LED thing above the camera. I think it’s to let people know when they’re on Candid Camera. Makes sense if they’re trying to match Ray-Ban Meta features.
The arms, though—chunky is an understatement. Packed with who-knows-what: batteries and processors, probably. Bet they’re running some future Android XR version. There’s this little slit under the left arm, close to Samat’s ear. Is it audio? Maybe. A button? Could be. I’m puzzled.
Not just Google in the game. Word on the street (or Bloomberg) is Apple’s brewing its own smart glasses potion. Custom processor and all that jazz.
Anyway—wait, no—where was I? Ah, yeah, Google I/O. It’s kicking off on May 20-21 with livestreams and keynotes galore. Outside of the big keynote, we’re hearing whispers about Android XR in two developer talks.
So, am I tuning in? Absolutely. You can catch the keynote live on YouTube, Tuesday, May 20th at 10 AM PT, if you’re, like, super curious. Here’s hoping for surprises—or at least some quirky tech giggles.
