So, I heard Zynga decided to just… shut down Echtra Games. Yeah, the same folks who gave us Torchlight 3. Why? Well, Zynga said it’s doing some “strategic realignment.” Whatever that means, right?
Anyway, Echtra was the brainchild of Max Schaefer. If that name rings a bell, it should. He’s one of the geniuses behind the original Torchlight and its 2012 follow-up. Long story short, he left Runic Games and started Echtra in 2016. Fast forward a bit, and Torchlight 3 drops in 2020, with Perfect World doing the release honors.
Then there was this whole thing where Zynga swooped in and bought Echtra in 2021. No one’s spilling how much they paid, but hey, Perfect World still owns Torchlight 3. At Zynga, Echtra was kinda busy. They were tinkering with a mysterious cross-platform RPG, and they had a hand in CSR Racing and the Star Wars: Hunters project, though that one’s had its share of bumps.
A Zynga rep came out and said they had to make the “difficult decision” to wind down Echtra’s operations, which means no more future projects from them. And yeah, some roles got axed. Pretty rough, but Zynga’s claiming it’s part of their big resource and priority shuffle. They’re also saying they’ll make sure the folks affected are treated nicely. Whatever that really looks like, who knows?
