A Flashback to the ’90s Vibes
Wayforward. Sounds kinda, I dunno, classic, right? Brings to mind those epic 2D gems on both handheld devices and consoles. Think River City Girls or, duh, Shantae. But hey, they’ve dabbled in a bunch of licensed stuff over the past 25 years. Enter Sabrina: The Animated Series – Zapped. Yep, it’s like diving into a decent platformer on the Game Boy Color, with a sprinkle of Shantae’s groundwork—or something like that.
So, Zapped! is all about Sabrina, the teenage witch (like, literally). She messes up and turns her classmates into animals. Chaos! To fix things, she jumps on their heads. I mean, sure, that’s one way to do it. Along the way, she learns new tricks: double jumps, controlling Salem (her sneaky cat), and even floating bubbles for those pesky vertical levels.
About the levels? Pretty tight, if I say so. They vary enough to keep things interesting. Picture this: a level where that bubble trick is life-saving, or playing half the time as Salem to smash blocks. No blockbuster stuff here, but it gives a nice nod to how platformers made their mark on the Game Boy Color. Big, colorful sprites and all—easy pick-up-and-play with passwords. Nice touch.
But wait, small hiccup—the Game Boy Color doesn’t have many buttons. Everything lives on the B-button—running, casting spells. Yeah, I got hit by enemies trying to multi-task. Classic. Given it’s a TV show spin-off platformer, it plays surprisingly well. It’s not earth-shattering or anything, not even close to what Shantae offers. Still, Shantae had to start somewhere, right? Maybe it’s more like a curiosity than anything, but hey, Sabrina: The Animated Series – Zapped isn’t a bad hang, at least for one playthrough.
