Meta’s gone and done it again, adding Zoom to the Horizon Store. So now, your Quest avatar can attend those ever-so-fun online meetings. What a time to be alive, right?
Alrighty, quick trip down memory lane—back in 2021, they tossed Zoom into Horizon Workrooms. That was more like a face-to-face VR gig, pulling webcam folks into a shared imaginary room. Strange but kinda cool, I guess?
Now, if Zoom’s your main squeeze, you can snag this standalone app, free of charge. Meta’s pitching it as a “seamless extension” of the Zoom app you’re already glued to on your phone or computer. Seamless, they say. Hmm.
I saw a pic somewhere (can’t recall exactly where)—bunch of avatars in a meeting scene. Sort of surreal—faces all cartoony while trying to be serious. Like, could this really be the future of work?
Anyway (or maybe not), what’s nifty—or is it?—about this new app is you can show up as your avatar from Horizon Worlds. Not in the fancy 3D way like in Workrooms, though. Your avatar’s just there in 2D, hanging out on the screen. Wonder if folks still want to see that after all these years?
Oh, and the avatars—still cartoon-level compared to Apple’s shiny new Persona avatars. Those hit the scene with the Vision OS in ’24. Vision Pro users have been Zooming this way since February or something. Gotta love some avatar rivalry.
But hey, can’t really scoff at free stuff, can we? If you’re game, grab the Zoom Workplace app from the Horizon Store. Just log in like you normally do, and voilà, you’re in. Meetings, avatars, chaos—bring it on!
